New Orleans has long been known as an oasis of cultural deviancy in the conservative South. So how did the city react to Prohibition? Not well, as you might imagine. Vieux Carre Recipe
- 3/4 oz rye whiskey
- 3/4 oz Cognac
- 3/4 oz sweet vermouth
- 1 barspoon Benedictine
- 2 dashes Peychaud’s bitters
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- Maraschino cherry (for garnish)
Stir with ice and strain, serve in a rocks glass, and garnish with a cherry.

Ramos Gin Fizz Recipe
- 1 1/2 oz Old Tom gin
- 3/4 oz lemon juice (half of one lemon)
- 1/2 oz lime juice (half of one lime)
- 1/2 oz simple syrup (1:1)
- 1 oz heavy cream
- 1 egg white
- 3 drops orange flower water
- 1 oz seltzer water
Shake everything except the seltzer very thoroughly with ice, shake for at least one full minute. Strain into a highball glass, top with seltzer and briefly stir once one. The modern version of the drink is often made with London Dry gin, but the original recipe calls for Old Tom.
